If there is such a thing as a "Doktor-Uncle," that's how I will remember Ihor Sevcenko. Our first acquaintance goes back to his visit in 1986 to Oxford, where I was a graduate student working under the direction of his great friend Cyril Mango. He took an interest in a small 13th-century project on which I was working and generously and patiently shared his erudition and enthusiasm for all things Byzantine. Since then, his kindness, concern, and encouragement meant a lot, oftentimes offered with a gentle sense of humor, and always with elegance and grace.
My sincere condolences to all who mourn his loss, especially his family. There will never be another like him and he will be fondly remembered.
